At GATX Rail Europe, we continuously adapt our fleet to meet evolving logistics requirements. With the introduction of our adapted ACTS railcar solution, we are expanding the possibilities for modular, high-flexibility intermodal transportation, designed to serve dynamic markets such as waste and industrial logistics.
From Pilot Operation to Scalable Solution
As part of a dedicated “Waste on Rail” initiative, the adapted GATX ACTS railcar has successfully completed its first operational test runs, transporting material to the local incineration plant. This pilot has demonstrated that the technical foundation for flexible waste transportation by rail is operational. At the same time, broader market adoption depends on framework conditions that continue to evolve in many European countries. Strengthening rail’s role in multimodal logistics remains a shared objective across the industry.
The ACTS Railcar Solution: Modular, Robust, Versatile
At the core of the solution is the adapted intermodal railcar based on our Sggmrss, equipped with four rotating frames (plates) for ACTS containers.
Key technical parameters:
The rotating frame concept enables exceptional operational flexibility:
Our focus is on delivering a high-performance rail platform that integrates seamlessly into multimodal supply chains.
Engineered for System Optimization
The new ACTS railcar type is ready for further operational validation. Following the first successful test runs, the rotating frame is being further refined and optimized. After modification, additional test applications are planned to explore its full range of industrial use cases.
Johannes Frieß, Head of Fleet Management at GATX Rail Europe, emphasizes the strategic relevance of the development: “With the adapted ACTS railcar type, we are enhancing our intermodal portfolio with a highly flexible and modular solution. The rotating frame technology enables efficient loading and unloading concepts while maintaining the robustness and reliability our customers expect from GATX equipment.”
With the first successful test completed and further trials ahead, we are taking another step toward making rail freight not just possible, but practical. Learn more about the ACTS intermodal railcar solution or request a quote.
