Upon hearing about GATX’s Training Academy Campus in Lehrte, HELM, one of the largest independent chemical companies in the world and one of our longstanding partners, reached out to arrange training for its teams. The program combined practical tank railcar training with an opportunity for direct exchange between HELM employees and GATX experts.
From Technical Overview to Practical Training
The training began with an overview of the GATX fleet before moving on to the construction and operation of tank railcars. Practical sessions covered key components of tank railcars, including the underframe, wheelsets, suspension, buffers, and braking systems.
Participants also explored tank railcar markings, from tank codes to inspection information. GATX trainers explained how to interpret these details and identify important technical information on the railcar itself.
Coupling systems and an introduction to digital automatic coupling rounded out this part of the program, connecting familiar equipment with developments in rail transportation.
Exploring Tank Railcars Up Close
Then our focus turned to fittings and their handling. The program also offered participants the opportunity to view the tank’s interior and gain a closer understanding of its design.
The practical format brought the equipment directly into the training, giving HELM’s teams space to ask questions and discuss technical topics with GATX specialists. On both days, the emphasis was on sharing expertise and building familiarity with the railcars that support their transportation needs.
“Our role as a partner includes helping customers understand the railcars they rely on. HELM’s interest in our railcar training gave us a valuable opportunity to share practical expertise, answer questions, and strengthen our partnership,” says Carolin Schroeder, Sales Manager at GATX Rail Europe.
A Reliable Partner at Every Level
For GATX Rail Europe, being a reliable, strategic partner means supporting customers throughout the leasing relationship. In addition to providing railcars and ongoing service, this includes sharing the technical expertise that helps customers understand their fleet.
HELM’s interest in the railcar training created an opportunity to strengthen our partnership through personal exchange and practical learning. Thank you to HELM for taking the initiative to explore our training offering. We look forward to continuing our partnership and supporting even more teams with railcar expertise.
